Connect NetBot to an AI model

Let NetBot answer anything about your network and prepare tasks, with Claude or a local model.

NetBot is the small robot in the bottom right corner. Without any setup it explains how Retivo works, opens the right page, and answers simple live questions such as what is down or where a device is.

Connected to an AI model, it answers anything about your network ("what should I upgrade first?", "what changed today?") and can do things on request: check status, back up, start a vulnerability check, rename devices, add devices to a group, change backup storage, or prepare a config push.

Before you begin

  • You need Manage settings.
  • An API key for Claude (Anthropic) or the address of an OpenAI-compatible server, including a local Ollama or LM Studio.

Steps

  1. Settings > NetBot.
  2. Choose the provider:
    • Anthropic (Claude): paste an API key from the Claude Console.
    • OpenAI-compatible: enter the server address and model, for example http://ollama.lan:11434/v1 and llama3.1, or OpenAI's address with an API key.
  3. Tick Use an AI model for NetBot, save, and press Test the model.
  4. Optionally tick Let it read saved configs so it can answer questions about a device's configuration.

What NetBot can and cannot do

  • Everything it does runs with the user's own role and groups, and is written to the audit log.
  • Anything that changes something shows a Confirm card first.
  • It never sends a config push itself. It opens Push to many with the lines filled in, and the usual preview and typed yes still apply.

Caution

Questions and the data NetBot looks up (device names, addresses, versions, status, and configs if you allowed it) go to the provider you chose. Use a local model when that data must not leave your network.
